What Makes Us Human?
For thousands of years, humans have circled one particular campfire question: What makes us human? It showed up in philosophy, religion, poetry, and late-night conversations when people are honest enough to admit they don’t fully understand themselves.
Now the question is back with fresh urgency—not because we suddenly became more curious, but because AI has become more capable.
When a system can write poetry, solve equations, diagnose patterns, and hold a conversation that feels surprisingly natural, the old boundary lines start to blur. The traits we once used as proof of our uniqueness are no longer exclusively ours.

When “What We Do” Stops Working

Every human life is finite. Time runs out. That fact changes everything. It makes choices real. It makes moments precious. It makes love feel urgent and loss feel profound.

Even our internal voice often comes from external voices we’ve absorbed.
AI can analyze relationships. It can simulate supportive conversation. It can generate language that resembles care. But it doesn’t belong to a web of mutual dependency in the same way. It doesn’t need a tribe to survive. It doesn’t carry a childhood, a lineage, a social risk.
Humans don’t just communicate. We stake ourselves in connection.
